Maths
At Five Lanes Primary, we believe that mathematics provides essential knowledge and skills that children need for everyday life and future learning. Our aim is for all pupils to develop confidence, fluency and enjoyment in mathematics, enabling them to think mathematically and apply their knowledge to a range of problems.
Through high-quality teaching and carefully planned learning experiences, we ensure that children develop secure foundations in number, calculation and mathematical reasoning.
Our Approach to Maths
Our mathematics curriculum is designed to help children:
-
Develop fluency in number and calculation
-
Reason mathematically by explaining and justifying their thinking
-
Solve problems using a range of strategies
Lessons encourage children to explore ideas, make connections and develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts.
Teachers use a structured scheme to support planning while maintaining the professional autonomy to adapt learning to meet the needs of their class.
Building Strong Number Foundations
Developing strong number sense is a key focus throughout the school.
Using Mastering Number, children learn to:
-
Understand number relationships
-
Use efficient calculation strategies
-
Develop mental maths skills
-
Apply their knowledge to solve problems
By securing these foundations, pupils are able to build confidence and tackle increasingly complex mathematical ideas.
Times Tables
Rapid recall of times tables is an important part of mathematical fluency.
At Five Lanes Primary we provide regular opportunities for children to practise their times tables through engaging activities and digital platforms such as TT Rock Stars.
This helps children develop the quick recall needed to support wider mathematical learning.
Pupils in Year 4 take part in the national Multiplication Tables Check, which assesses their recall of multiplication facts.
Mathematical Thinking
We encourage pupils to talk about their mathematical thinking and explain their reasoning. Through discussion, questioning and problem-solving activities, children learn to:
-
Explain how they solved a problem
-
Compare different strategies
-
Make connections between mathematical ideas
This helps deepen understanding and supports long-term learning.
Mathematics in the Early Years
In the Early Years, mathematics is taught through a combination of adult-led activities and carefully planned provision.
Children explore:
-
Counting and number recognition
-
Comparing quantities
-
Shape, space and measure
-
Mathematical language through play
These experiences provide the firm foundations for learning and flourishing as children move into Key Stage 1.
Supporting Maths at Home
Parents and carers can support their child’s mathematical development by:
-
Practising number facts and times tables
-
Playing number games
-
Talking about maths in everyday situations such as shopping, cooking or measuring
Working together helps children build confidence and develop a positive attitude towards mathematics.
